Women’s health procedures

Day Surgery Clinic

What happens during your appointment?

At your initial appointment, your consultant will discuss any symptoms you are experiencing while asking questions about your medical history. This may be followed by a physical exam of the site.

If further investigations are required, our team will help re-arrange these.

What are the different women’s health procedures available?

Copper coil (insertion & removal)

This is an intrauterine device (IUD) that releases copper into the womb to prevent pregnancy. your consultant will insert this T-shaped plastic and copper device into the uterus. This can be reversed at any time, with your consultant removing the contraceptive device within the clinic itself.

Mirena coil (insertion & removal)

It is a hormonal IUD that releases a type of hormone progestin into the womb to prevent pregnancy. Your consultant will insert this T-shaped plastic device into the uterus. If you decide to have this removed, your consultant can arrange for this to be performed within the clinic itself.

Treatment of Bartholin’s cyst

If you develop a cyst on your Bartholin gland, the consultant will make a small incision in the cyst to allow them to drain it. The procedure is conducted as a day case under local anaesthetic.

Hysteroscopy

This is a diagnostic procedure that involves inserting a thin flexible tube with a light at the end, into the vagina. This allows the consultant to thoroughly assess the cervix and uterus for any abnormalities. In some cases, it may be used to remove any polyps or fibroids.

Polypectomy

This procedure is used to extract any polyps found inside the lining of the uterus. Polyps are benign growths that are also commonly referred to as endometrial polyps. Depending on their size and previous discussions with the consultant, polyps can be removed under local anaesthetic.

MonaLisa

MonaLisa is a laser vaginal rejuvenation treatment used to improve vaginal dryness, painful intercourse, mild laxity, and mild urinary incontinence. The consultant will use a laser to help treat the soft tissues which will encourage regeneration of healthy tissue to support rapid healing, making your vaginal tissues produce secretions and making it more supple. MonaLisa is a minimally invasive and painless procedure.

Endometrial scratch

If you have experienced multiple failed IVF / ICSI cycles, despite having good quality embryos transferred, your consultant may recommend an endometrial scratch. During this procedure, a thin flexible plastic tube called a pipelle catheter is used to “scratch” the lining of the womb. This triggers the body’s natural response to repair the site of the scratch, releasing chemicals and hormones that make the lining of the womb more receptive to an embryo implanting, increasing your chances of a successful pregnancy.
