Wound infection

It is important to remember to not disturb or change your wound dressing until the appointment with your surgeon. You must keep the wound dressing as dry as possible, this is to avoid any infection.

After surgery or any procedure infection is uncommon however it is important to look out for changes which include:

  • Wound area becoming very red or hot to touch
  • Swelling that makes the skin tight, shiny and stretched
  • Fluid that leaks beyond the dressing.

Sometime a wound infection can make you feel unwell with shivering, shaking and a raised temperature. You can get in touch with one of our breast care nurses or your consultant as infections may require antibiotics.

It is however normal to experience bruising, colour and sensation changes after your surgery.
