Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a formation of blood clots (thrombosis) which occurs deep inside the veins inside your body and can be found anywhere on your body. To help your consultant diagnose your DVT they refer you for an ultrasound scan and additional blood tests if required.
Symptoms of DVT
- throbbing pain or cramps in the area
- swelling
- skin gets warm around the area
- red or darkened skin
- swollen veins – hard or sore when touched
Additionally, you may also experience breathlessness and chest pain.
DVT is deemed a very serious medical condition. If you are concerned that you may be suffering form DVT, is important that you speak with a consultant and receive a diagnosis. If the condition is not treated in time, blood clots in the veins can break loose, travel through your bloodstream and become stuck in your lungs.
Treatment options
Once diagnosed, your consultant along with your informed consent will either opt to treat DVT with
- blood thinners (anticoagulants)
- surgery
