Breast Implant Review
If you have breast implants it is important for you to have regular implant heath checks.
While there’s no strict timeline for breast implant MRI or ultrasound screenings, it’s essential to monitor your breast health. If you experience any changes or concerns, please consult your consultant for an ultrasound. Women over 40 should continue with their annual breast screenings as recommended.
If you are over 40, you must continue to have your annual breast screening done.

What happens during your appointment?
With implants you need to have them checked regularly. Any changes may indicate either a rupture of the implant or BIA-ALCL.
Basis of breast awareness
If you showcase any of the following symptoms this could indicate a rupture of your implant and you should visit your consultant:
- lumps or swelling in and around the breast region
- a change in the shape of the breast
- redness around the breast
- pain and tenderness or a burning sensation in the breast area
- enlarged lymph nodes in the armpit
If you have PIP implants, which contain unapproved silicone gel manufactured by French company Poly Implant Prostheses (PIP), NHS states that they are 2 to 6 times more likely to rupture than standard silicone implants.
BIA-ALCL
Breast Implant Associated-Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) is a rare type of lymphoma that is found to be associated with breast implant (silicone or saline). It is a rare subtype of T-cell Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma (NHL), one of four sub-types of ALCL found in a small number of cases world-wide.
