What happens during your appointment?
Your consultant will assess your individual risk factors and discuss the benefits and limitations of available screening options, including emerging technologies. We’ll explore whether genetic testing is appropriate for you and, if so, explain the process involved. If genetic testing isn’t suitable, we’ll discuss alternative screening methods like mammograms or MRIs
What are the different genetic tests available?
Based on your initial assessment and discussion on the various available test options, your consultant may advise you on proceeding with one of the mentioned genetic test options.
Basis of breast awareness
The BRAC analysis is important as it helps determine if you may be at risk of developing hereditary breast and ovarian cancer (HBOC) syndrome.
Breast and Ovarian Cancer (HBOC) that runs in the family can occur because of a mutation or alteration in the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes.
Inherited genetic panel testing
Inherited genetic panel testing can be offered by your consultant which looks at the sequence of 19 different breast, ovarian and colorectal genes, including the complete sequence of BRCA1 and BRCA2.
This test provides a more accurate result; measuring the risk of developing breast, ovarian and colorectal cancers.
Comprehensive inherited genetic panel testing
This is a more comprehensive test of the inherited genetic panel testing.
This test examines the sequence of 28 different inherited genes involved in 8 common cancers, which can be very useful in patients with a complicated or unusual family history of cancers.
