Hormone replacement therapy (HRT)
When you are nearing menopause, the body’s hormones – oestrogen and progesterone start to decline; Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) helps to replace these hormones relieving you of menopausal symptoms.
What happens during your appointment?
During your first hormone replacement therapy (HRT) consultation, your consultant will discuss all your symptoms (hot flashes, night sweats, mood changes, etc.) to see if HRT is the right fit for you. They may recommend blood tests to confirm menopause and check your thyroid function, ensuring HRT is the safest and most effective option for managing your individual menopause journey.
Treatment options
Your body stops producing oestrogen and progesterone during menopause. There are different ways to restore the lost hormones and your consultant will discuss the following options with you.
- Medication
- Injections
- Skin cream / spray
- Vaginal rings or creams
Benefits of HRT
The main benefit of HRT is that it can help relieve most menopausal symptoms. Other benefits to HRT include:
- Palliate menopausal symptoms
- Protect against cardiovascular disease
- Subside perimenopausal depression
- Osteoporosis – prevent weakening of the bones
- Prevent loss of your muscle
Risks of HRT
The benefit of HRT outweighs the risks. Your consultant will advice you of these risks and how to best maintain them.

- Blood clots
